How to write an amazing blog (without all the technical stuff!).

Writing a blog isn’t just about using proper English or grammar.  Focus and personality are the key ingredients of a well-read blog.

How do you inject focus and personality into your blogs?  It’s finding the flow of words and content from your head to the screen, so it is becomes a natural process.

I have written before about the technicalities of writing a blog, the language and grammar you should use – this can be dry but necessary.  I also get asked how I write so many blogs and articles and make the process look easy and well written.

Well, here’s the secret!  The following points are the little things that can make a big difference to a great blog - and make the process of blog writing just that much easier.

1.       Choose a focused topic

This isn’t just about choosing a topic that your readers and customers ask you all the time – the kind of content that will make your blog well read, popular with lots of shares on social media – everything you need to draw traffic to your blog, website and get sales.

It’s about going that one step further and finding a topic that is simple and tight so you don’t get distracted and go off on tangents while you are writing.

If you choose a topic that is too broad, the process of blog writing becomes laboured and difficult to stay on track because there are so too many things to write about.

I know how easy it is to stray and find that a focused topic is a great remedy.

This blog, for instance, how to write an amazing blog, could go off in so many tangents, but I decided to focus on the process of writing.  I have written two blogs on this topic already, this one about finding a natural way to write blogs and my previous one about sentence structure and grammar.

 2.       Write like no one is watching and going to read it.

Write what is in your head about your chosen topic, with the thought that no one is going to read it.

Once you have relaxed and given yourself permission to write anything, you will be amazed at what you can do.

If you do hesitate or falter, keep telling yourself no one is going to read it, so it doesn’t matter what you write or how you write it.

Remember, you have expert knowledge in the topic, you want to impart this knowledge with your readers, AND most importantly, they want to know about it.  So tell them!

3.       Pretend you are telling someone about the topic.

The best written blogs read like a conversation.

If you get stuck with the blog writing, pretend you are having a conversation with someone and tell them about your topic.  What and how would you say it to them?

Always keep your target audience in the back of your mind as you write and picture yourself across the desk or over a coffee telling them about this topic.  Think about what they want to know about this topic, go the extra mile and give them something they may not have considered.

This should be enough to get you back on track.

 4.       Edit, edit and edit again!

I have said this in my other articles about blog writing and I can’t say it enough.

This is where your real work begins.  Cast no dispersion on your writing and keep editing, moving the content around into a logical order, until you like what you read.

Keep the gist of your writing though as that is what makes your blog special – your voice.

I find that reading my blog aloud helps to find the natural flow of the article and highlights where the words and sentences falter and need to be rewritten.

Try adding breaks to the content with sub headings, so readers can absorb the information in chunks.

5.       Put your personality into it

Don’t go too far with your editing. You want your personality to shine through the article so the reader gets to know you a little more.  This is what makes your blog different to the other blogs in the internet world.  You.

As I wrote in point number 3, write like you are having a conversation.  A conversation is when your personality comes through so if you write like you are talking, what makes you unique will become obvious.

I really hope these steps help you to write amazing blogs and to relax during the process of blog writing, so it becomes an enjoyable activity, not an arduous task. . Blog writing can be so satisfying.
